The name "Savannah" comes from the Latin word Sabanum and the Spanish word Savana which means an extensive marsh or open grassy plain. The large Montezuma marsh of 1900 acres and the Seneca River have provided excellent hunting grounds for our Native Americans through the 1700's.On November 24, 1825, the Town of Savannah was formed from Galen. The railroad came through in 1854 and by 1867 a village had been established at the rail head. Today Savannah is best known for its large vegetable muck farms.

Today, Savannah is in a transition. This rich marshland that produced so many potatoes and other vegetables is slowly being replaced by the welands that are noted for their role in the migration of our ducks and geese. And its wide-open grassy lands will again shape Savannah, as we become one of the largest wetland projects in New York State but, we must never forget each of the different stages of Savannah’s growth and development.

History of the Town of Savannah

Savannah, the southeast corner town in Wayne County, was formed from Galen on November 24, 1825. It comprises the eastern part of lot 27 of the Military Tract, and has an area of 21,908 acres, which was originally surveyed into lots of 600 acres each. It is bounded on the north by Butler, on the east by CayugaCounty, on the south by SenecaCounty, and on the west by Galen. The name Savannah is derived from the Latin, Sabanum, and from the Spanish, Savana or Sabada, and means, according to Webster, and extensive open plain or meadow, or a plain destitute of trees, and covered with grass. From the following description it will be seen the town was appropriately named.
